A loan helped an Latina restaurant owner refurbish her kitchen equipment to grow her business.

Laura's story

Hello, I am Laura, and my sister Sandra and I founded Bites & Bowls restaurant in Springdale, Arkansas, in 2018. Throughout my childhood and teenage years growing up in Mexico, my parents were busy with their family business there. This required me to prepare the meals for myself and my younger sister Sandra such that this constant exposure made me realize cooking is my true passion. Years later, in my early twenties, I moved to the US, and after learning English, I took culinary art classes at my local community college. I worked for several years all over Northwest Arkansas in the food industry at various businesses before founding Bites & Bowls. Since I believe healthy but tasty and creative food has the power to nourish one’s heart and mind, we created Bites & Bowls to provide healthy food choices to our diverse Northwest Arkansas community. The Hispanic business community was small when I first moved to Northwest Arkansas. Still, today we are 36% of the overall population in Springdale and have a thriving small business community. I combine day-to-day authentic Mexican ingredients to turn classic American dishes into my original creations, and my restaurant has been wonderfully embraced by my community and all of Northwest Arkansas, including major corporations and groups that now hire us for catering work. Thus, I have brought my cultural foods to the general public and educated and nourished everyone to embrace healthier eating habits here.
