A loan helped a small, woman-owned textile studio create a beautiful storefront and gathering space in Hamtramck.

Meghan's story

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and was interested in sewing from a young age. I could always hang out in the sewing room in high school, working on projects or knitting during class. After high school, I moved to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), majoring in Textile Development and Marketing. Living in New York was such a pivotal experience for me. It was in New York where I was confronted face to face with the trash and waste of everyday life - it's right there on the street! In New York, I learned how to hustle and make stuff happen! I was an RA in school, involved in the textiles club, had several internships, worked part-time in retail, and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

At FIT, I learned about the atrocities of the fashion industry and how much pollution and human suffering are involved in producing our goods. At FIT, I also learned about natural dyeing with plants and sustainable alternatives to the current production systems. While at FIT, two classmates and I created the rooftop natural dye garden project. This was a significant accomplishment validated by our success at the international Clinton Global Initiative University conference.

After graduating from FIT, I moved to Detroit. I was passionate about entrepreneurship, and it felt like the correct city to make it happen. I have found an incredible community of fellow creatives and customers in Detroit. I have learned so much about working collaboratively with your neighbors and fellow small businesses and how we can improve our city by supporting one another.
