Jacob's story

As a Latinx and woman-owned business in Flint, Jake and I have created a place inside Sal’s Gym where members of the community can challenge themselves and meet other people wanting the same thing: growth. We own and operate Sal’s Gym while raising our four children, Gunner (8), Cruz (6), Sofia (1), and Lucia (1).

Jake grew up on the north end of Flint with his large Hispanic family. His grandfather moved to Flint to work for Buick without being able to speak English. The same grit and tenacity found in his ancestors have always been flowing through Jake’s veins. He knew one day he wanted to give back to the city his family came to in his own way.

I grew up in Davison, a suburb of Flint. I am fascinated by human potential and the entrepreneurial journey. The daily tasks of running our business make me feel more deeply connected to my paternal and maternal grandparents who were also local, small business owners. I hope to someday pass down the lessons that they have taught me to our four children.

We were both heavily involved in coaching when we met. I coached cheerleading and gymnastics while Jake coached wrestling. As our relationship grew, so did our vision to live life in an extraordinary way and take risks together. When we started dreaming of opening a gym in Flint, people didn't understand our vision. With the same courage as his grandfather and with each other as our greatest support system, four years ago we finally opened our gym in Flint.
