A loan helped provide solar power to 125,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Altech's story

Roughly 70 million people in DRC (90% of the population) have no access to electricity, the vast majority live in extreme poverty and are spread out across the country in rural areas. These populations spend over $1 billion annually on dangerous and expensive energy solutions for lighting and cooking. It prevents people from improving the quality of their lives and their economic standing.

Altech is the market leader for clean energy in the DRC and was established in 2013 by Congolese co-founders, Washikala Malango and Iongwa Mashangao, who were forced to flee their home village by the Congolese civil war and grew up together in a refugee camp in Tanzania. Altech’s vision is to eliminate energy poverty in the DRC by 2030 by distributing solar lamps, solar home systems and clean cookstoves offering smart payment plans. Altech’s pay-as-you-go financing makes their products affordable to poor, off-grid Congolese households.

To date, Altech has impacted more than 1.3 million lives, created more than 2,900 jobs, saved over $40 million in energy costs for consumers, and helped to avoid 375,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

This loan of $500,000 will be used to purchase and distribute solar home systems that will provide electrification to off-grid Congolese households. It is Altech’s second through Kiva’s Labs. View their previous loan here.
