A loan helped a member to restock the shelves of her store and to buy more chickens.

Jazmines De La Toma Group's story

Thirty-five year old Suiliana, a mother of 3 children (aged 6-18), was widowed 2 ½ years ago. She has a 6th grade education and is proud that each of her children attend school from kindergarten to high school.

For 4 years, she has been a street vendor selling chicken pieces. She also supplies various stores. After the death of her husband, she opened a convenience store. Suliana works hard at both businesses since she is the sole provider for her family and she wants her children to continue their education. She requests her 4th Kiva loan to restock the shelves of her store with basic items and also buy more chickens.

As President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Jazmines de la Toma”, Suliana calls the monthly meetings to order. All 9 women in the group make loan payments and then participate in a relevant educational session, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care.

The women learn about effective business management practices that help them with their textile, donut and chicken businesses. Others like Suliana learn about how to manage their convenience stores. Topics like nutrition, health and hygiene are greatly useful for them as well. A Facilitator designs these sessions and uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share the information.

Suliana and the ladies in the Trust Bank send their gratitude to each Kiva investor for helping them to help themselves!
