A loan helped purchase Trinity Chess decks for retail and marketing.

Tom's story

My name is Tom. I am a writer and mathematician from Gainesville and have always been a gaming enthusiast. Most of my career was spent as a finance manager for a motorcycle dealership. In 2018, I retired and decided to return to the University of Florida to complete the final two semesters of my bachelor's degree and become a middle school math teacher. While I was at UF the Covid hit. Upon graduating in May 2020, due to the pandemic, I was unable to get work as a teacher. The state of Florida wasn't hiring. My plan of teaching to pay back my student loans and school expenses had failed due to Covid. I had always had perfect credit but now had to consider bankruptcy. I was depressed, began drinking heavily, and was arrested for a DUI.

It was while I was in jail for this, with only card decks and chess sets to work with, that I created Trinity Chess. The name comes from the three most important chess pieces and the fact that my sister had to put my sick 15-year-old dog, Trinity, to sleep while I was incarcerated. Over the past two years, while tutoring math online to support myself, I have perfected the game, researched the market, set up the business, and am building a social media presence. Tragedy struck in 2021 when my friend, and card designer, Jim Harrison, died of cancer. As a result, the Dedication Card for St. Judes Children's Hospital was added to the deck.

Trinity Chess is meant to bring people together. There is no white against black. We use shadow versus light. The pieces are not gender-specific. The game is only $15 and FREE for those in financial need. It's fun, and that's what we need today.
