A loan helped a widow to buy farm inputs such as certified seeds and high-nutrient fertilizer to improve her farm productivity.

Alice's story

Get to know Alice, a widow and a strong-minded woman who lives on her farm in a humble village in Keroka, Kenya, which is known for weather conditions that favor farmers. Alice is blessed with beautiful children, and she works hard to ensure they get a decent lifestyle. Alice is a farmer, although she also rears dairy cows and keeps poultry for the production of eggs.

Access to modern-quality farm inputs is the pillar of the agricultural revolution. However, in Kenya, a developing country, fertilizers and seed allocation by the government is below the needs of farmers. Since Juhudi Kilimo, in partnership with Kiva, ventured into the affairs of smallholder farmers in Kenya, farmers can attest that there has been a significant improvement in input availability than ever before.

Alice is seeking this loan so that she can use it to buy farming inputs such as hybrid seeds and fertilizer. The returns from the investment will change her life and that of her entire household, as she will use the additional income to raise their living standards and pay for her children's education.

Alice has a great desire to succeed and also a desire that Kiva lenders will listen to her request and help her better her life. She thanks lenders for their generous support.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
