Growing up on the southwest side of Rochester, New York, I was raised with a cooking and entrepreneurial spirit. My father was a barber and owned a farm and commercial plaza in Alabama, and both of my parents were excellent at cooking. As a young girl, I always loved to bake and sell food in the neighborhood.
After two decades of owning and operating a hair salon, at the age of 47, I enrolled at our local community college where I obtained an associate’s degree in hospitality with a concentration in culinary. While obtaining my internship hours at Roberts Wesleyan College, they made it very clear that I have what it takes to be a leader.
Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering came about because I just kept cooking for people and events and one of my longtime hair customers introduced me to her “baking and cooking” police officer husband and the rest is history. After carefully researching the step-by-step process of operating a catering business and interviewing successful caterers, Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering was officially established in August 2019.
The biggest business challenges are that we are in need of a POS system as we are using outdated written guest checks, appropriate visible signage, lights, security, and marketing to help maintain a steady daily flow of business during our open season which in return will be able to help bring in working capital to cover payroll.
Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering will help people by employing them and by training them to be professional and efficient in their areas of service. We will also donate our leftover food to Hearts for Hunger operated by Arlene Brown in Rochester NY, to distribute to the community and feed the underserved.

Located at 4435 Lake Avenue in Rochester New York near Charlotte Beach, Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering offers a menu created from classic American recipes derived from the south and infused with Italian flavors. We sell a wide variety of delicious baked goods such as pound cake, peach cobbler, cookies, pies, and puddings just to name a few. Seasonally dine-in and takeout are offered.
Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering caters for events of all sizes from private family cooking, couple’s dinners, rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions, family reunions, repass, grad parties, and more. Cooking classes and food prep services are offered upon request. We are available to cater any size event Tuesday through Saturday with the appropriate advance request. From June to January we offer dine-in and takeout 9 am-6 pm, and we offer catering year-round. We serve individuals looking for a hearty, tasty, authentic, creative meal. From college students to judges, and everyone in between, people from all walks of life love Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering.
I’m passionate about serving people and making them feel good. This plays a major role in my business because I’m giving it all I’ve got, with the expectation that the customers are going to love it! They even do a little dance at first bite; this is why I coined the phrase a “Jaw Jammin Experience” at Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering.
What is the purpose of this loan?
The purpose of the loan is to help grow the business. I am applying for the loan to add and maintain employees, set up my marketing and advertising channels, and obtain the equipment we need such as a deep freezer, deep fryer, and steam table.
The Kiva loan would really change things for our business by putting Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering on the map, making us more visible, and letting the community know that we are here to stay; we are not just a ‘here today gone tomorrow’ facility. We strive to be a staple in the Community like ‘Smitty’s Birdland’ was a household name in the ’80s.
My goal is to expand in the next two years to a full-on restaurant with a Sweet Shoppe that includes ice cream with a twist. Being located in the beach community, Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering plans to establish a food cart near the beach. This is lucrative as it will put us right in the midst of patrons.
I pride myself on being creative and breathing while moving forward. Ma’ama Tee’s Cookin & Catering strives to make a memorable statement in this great community that will reach surrounding cities drawing folks in for a Jaw Jammin experience!

Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
