A loan helped a women-owned farm business buy a used tractor.

Monica's story

I am a first-generation farmer and a mother. In 2020 I started a small flower farm with the goal of cultivating beautiful flowers and community. Each year the business has grown and I have been able to invest in my business by building a greenhouse and designing an irrigation system. In order to expand my business, I need a tractor. A tractor will help me improve the soil by implementing ecological practices like cover-cropping. It will also help me increase production. I currently break new ground using hand-held tools and a small walk behind the rototiller. I use a wheelbarrow to spread compost. These practices take time and are physically demanding. A tractor would help me become more efficient in my land-preparation techniques and allow me to grow more flowers for the local community.

I am motivated by watching plants grow and seeing community members enjoy the flowers. Flowers bring happiness and provide comfort during hard times. I consider it an honor to cultivate crops that can help improve society and the environment. My son is 13 months old and I look forward to raising a child who has access to nature and gets to be a part of an agricultural community.
