The beautiful, traditional clothing of Mayans is used by most proud, indigenous women in Guatemala. It comprises a knitted, wraparound skirt (the "corte"), a blouse ("huipil"), and a belt ("faja").
Juana, 42 years old and single, sews and knits colourful "huipiles". She has been doing this work for many years, and has two years of education behind her. Every month, Juana delivers ten blouses on average. To make these orders, she employs fifteen women in her community. Juana is happy to provide opportunities to others. Juana will use this third Kiva loan to buy a variety of threads in bulk.
Juana is one of eight members of the "Maya K'iche" group. The members live in the department/state of Quiche and are part of the "Puente de Vida" communal bank at Puente de Amistad. The women work in traditional textile businesses, selling clothing, and growing fruits (apples, peaches, and plums). The members decided to be successful and they are happy to be part of the "Micrcredito Plus" loan programme. Under this, the women take monthly, interactive training and receive bi-monthly medical attention. The programme is essential in empowering the women and creating better lives. The members learn about effective practices for managing their businesses, and about topics relating to women, families, and more. Every two months, the women have access to health care.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your friendliness in supporting these grateful borrowers!
