A loan helped a member to buy a cow and fertilizer.

Thanh Yen 59 Group's story

The woman who stands first on the right in the photo is the leader of Thanh Yen 59 Group. Huoi is 39 years old and a Thai ethnic minority woman. She is now living with her family in a stilt house in Dien Bien province, which is one of the most deprived areas in northwest Vietnam. Most people’s income is derived from agricultural production.

She got divorced and it is hard enough raising two children as a single mom. There are three people consisting of her and her two sons who serve in the army. Her main job is farming, specifically growing rice, corn and cassava.

She really would like to expand to a wide variety of products based on her existing farm, which covers an area of 3,000 square meters for growing rice and 3,000 square meters for growing sweet corn. Currently, she has been raising one cow and one buffalo for production, respectively. You know she works hard and can’t afford much.

This year, the crop yield of rice and corn will be dropped due to harsh weather, a lack of fertilizer, and skyrocketing input prices. She cherished the intention of buying another cow, first for plowing and then for breeding. Furthermore, she is now taking aim at buying enough fertilizer and agricultural inputs.

Huoi decided to take a loan to buy a cow and fertilizer. She hopes that with her experience and the enthusiastic support from the technical staff of the Anh Chi Em program, the investment will be successful and profitable.
