A loan helped a member to buy fertilizer for her corn field and lemon tree cuttings to plant.

Nueva La Union Sector 2 Group's story

Marcela, a 44-year-old married woman of 7 children, all over the age of 8, and grandmother of 2, is married to a farmer who also works as a day laborer. Four of her children have a 6th grade education and the younger ones are in the first years of elementary school. Marcela has a 4th grade education. Marcela raises/sells chickens and also farms corn and lemons. With her 2nd Kiva loan, she will be able to buy fertilizer for the corn field and lemon tree cuttings.

Six other women who also live in the department/state of Suchitepequez have elected Marcela to be President of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Nueva La Union Sector 2”. Two of them speak Maya Tz'utujil and the rest speak Spanish, the language of Guatemala. They also have animal husbandry businesses and small farms, as well as convenience stores. The “Microcredit Plus” program gives them some of the tools that they need to succeed. At their monthly meetings, a facilitator designs interactive educational sessions using pictures, drawings, games and role-playing to share information about everyday topics like health, nutrition, hygiene, the use of medicinal plants, women’s issues and family matters. They also gain business management skills. These training sessions are imperative to their success since they have little or no formal education.
