Lorenza, the 42 year old treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Los Encinos” or “The Oaks”, is married to a weaver. The couple have 6 children who range in age from 1-21. The 3 older children completed the 6th grade and the rest are still in school. The oldest are married and Lorenza has 5 grandchildren.
Lorenza sells the fabrics that her husband weaves. She has 3 looms and delivers the textiles to 2 markets in the department/state of Quiche. Lorenza has 2 employees who help with the business. With her 6th Kiva loan, she will be able to buy more thread to weave colorful traditional aprons.
Lorenza, along with 9 other Maya K’iche women, participates in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational trainings and bi-monthly health care services.
She is the treasurer of the Trust Bank. The ladies are weavers, manage convenience stores, raise chickens, pigs, and bulls and sell personal care products.
Because they have little or no formal education (Lorenza has a 2nd grade education), they benefit greatly from their educational sessions designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share information drawn from 4 areas: health, family, women, business. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services, consults and exams delivered by a traveling nurse.
On behalf of the 9 women in the group, Lorenza sends gratitude to each Kiva investor for their kindness in funding these loans!
