A loan helped us repair our tractor and purchase a sawmill to build a farm store and other farm buildings.

Alycia's story

We were just two kids from an inner-city in Rhode Island who ran off together and got married when I joined the Army. The first duty station for us was in Fort Campbell, KY. Culture-shocked and faced with deployment, we spent as much time together as we could. This included seeking out unique foods and learning different ways of cooking.

After Ryan returned home from Afghanistan, he was diagnosed with quite a few medical conditions due to his tour overseas. The hunt for good food began. Shortly after the change of diet, we found out we were pregnant with our first child. We then chose to eat “clean”. The research we did at this time changed the way we viewed our food. We realized to be in complete control over what you were eating, you had to grow it yourself.

Ryan decided to leave the military, and we relocated back to New England to start our family. Within a month, our daughter was born. More research brought us to create our garden in a backyard in the middle of a city, and then after our second child was born we moved out to rural Connecticut for more land.

Now, we have four children and own and operate Radical Roots Farm on an additional 84 acres. We have invested countless hours into nurturing the soil and our livestock. Our hand-selection of our herd genetics has been the foundation for healthy, disease-resistant animals that have a beneficial impact on the environment.
