My name is Mynetria. I'm a Sunnyside, TX native, mom, urban gardener, and the proud creator of Balanced Root Market!
In 2016, I romanticized the idea of taking on entrepreneurship, a road my paternal family was well equipped in.
Because I love helping others and being of service, I knew that the next career choice I made had to be one with purpose and passion behind it, one that was beneficial to others and something I could pass down to my children. After visiting my cousin in my old neighborhood of Sunnyside, I realized my community was lacking access to fresh produce, gyms, farmers' markets, and healthy meal options. Although I love a good plate of " Monk Rice" (named after my late uncle, David "Monk" Jones) from TP'S restaurant, I wanted to have more diversity in the nutritional department. Immediately I knew Sunnyside was where I needed to be.
In 2019, I began cooking more vegan/vegetarian meals for my family and began growing my own produce on my patio. After a few weeks, my friends and family began paying me for my meal preps. Three months later, I found out I was a pre-diabetic and began making cold-pressed juices to aid in my nutritional intake. One day I made a juice for my partner Marvin; he raved about how delicious the juice was and said that I should implement it in my business.
Fast forward to 2020, I'm now urban gardening and using the produce I've grown to make and sell my own cold-pressed juices and vegan soul food meals, and on occasion been able to give away produce to friends and family.
My ultimate goal is to purchase land in Sunnyside, farm-fresh produce for the community, and open my own brick-and-mortar store.

WHO WE ARE:
Balanced Root is an exciting new company focused on providing fresh organic produce, healthy prepared meals, and cold-pressed juices to under-served families in the Sunnyside community.
WHAT WE DO:
Our approach is farm to the family! All produce will be organically grown at Balanced Root, picked, washed, bagged, and prepared for local delivery or customer pickup. With this approach, our customers know exactly where their food is coming from, and we cut out all middlemen.
WHY WE DO IT:
Unfortunately, Sunnyside is not the only food desert. If you drive through many urban communities, you will notice the situation is the same no matter the city or state. There is an abundance of fast-food restaurants, beauty supply stores, liquor stores, and payday loan stores consuming our communities; while farmer's markets, grocery stores, and gyms are desolate in these areas.
OUR GOAL:
We hope to be a community asset that provides, not only fresh fruits and vegetables but education, job training, and a source of pride for the community. In addition, it is hoped that the market will be a model for other food deserts within the city.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
