As an avid traveler, I had always wanted to give back to the communities that hosted me but never found an easy way to do so. I figured I could solve this problem by creating a souvenir tourist could buy and have part of the proceeds benefit a local nonprofit in the place the souvenir represented. I thought it was important to have the souvenir designed by someone from the community as well, and so we started partnering with local artists to do so. While I didn’t necessarily get into business, I’ve found that business has provided me with the most effective way of solving the social problems I set out to tackle after completing my master's in Humanitarian Aid.
On the more personal side, I found it difficult to replicate the same sense of purpose and service I had in the military within the private sector. Pursuing entrepreneurship has allowed me to both reclaim this sense of purpose and fully leverage the skills I developed in the military that don’t necessarily translate to “normal” employment. In that regard, it helps too that my co-founder is a fellow veteran that I served with. Working to bring this new idea to life has been so powerful as we’ve recreated the same sense of camaraderie and determination that we had while serving together.

Our mission is to make giving back while traveling easy, impactful, and memorable. We do this by selling souvenir patches, designed by local artists, and donating 50% of our proceeds to a nonprofit in the place each patch represents. All travelers have to do is buy a patch, and they'll have contributed to strengthening the community that hosted them. The nonprofits we support are all carefully vetted community-based organizations to ensure long-term and sustainable impact.
Besides selling through local retailers (50+ to date) we’ve also built a robust e-commerce platform that brings the experience of buying a souvenir online. Our customers can search for the patch representing the place they visited, learn about the artist that designed it, and the nonprofit their purchase benefits. In doing so we’re building the easiest and most effective way to #givewhereyougo.
What is the purpose of this loan?
Since launching our business we have been working diligently to ensure sustainability permeates all aspects of what we do. We selected patches as our core product because they are small, can be added onto other “stuff”, and are relatively low in terms of an environmental impact compared to other collectible souvenir products (ex. shot glasses, magnets, etc).
However, we have not been satisfied with the sustainability of our production process, and since day one we have been pushing our manufacturers to transition to utilizing more environmentally friendly materials. After seven months of lobbying, they have finally agreed but have asked us to source and purchase these materials ourselves. We have since found a thread supplier which recycles post-consumer PET plastic into usable thread (for the patches) but needs the additional capital to purchase a bulk order.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
