A loan helped to purchase farming inputs such as fertilizer and hybrid seeds to boost the quality of her produce.

Janet's story

Janet always has a smile on her face. Despite the burden of parenting her six children, Janet has always loved her children and is unwilling to let them suffer. She is a crop farmer and also rears dairy cattle. She obtains her income by selling her produce in the local market.

In Kenya, agriculture is one of the most competitive industries, especially due to the high cost of operations necessary to improve farming. Such costs include land acquisition and inputs, the price of which has continually risen.

To meet the high costs of inputs, farmers have been forced to borrow from financial institutions that sometimes impose very complicated procedures in loan distribution. Some farmers, and especially women, end up hopeless and despondent and lack the morale to invest in agriculture.

Janet is seeking this loan to purchase farming inputs such as fertilizer and hybrid seeds to boost the quality of her produce, earn more profits, and elevate her living standards. This loan is an opportunity that she never got before. Her irregular income and lack of collateral were the main drawbacks limiting her from accessing a loan from commercial banks.

Thanks to Juhudi Kilimo and Kiva, the life of Janet and her children will be changed through this loan.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
