A loan helped a member to buy a variety of thread and tools for the loom.

Emanuel Group's story

In rural Guatemalan areas, women and children have little to no education. Through small businesses, they've found a way to generate income and fight against poverty.

Meet Cristina. She's 27-years old and married. Her husband is a farmer. Together, they are raising a 4-year old boy.

Cristina earns an income through her textile business. A trade she learned from her mother. After 15 years of running the business, she has become very popular with her neighbours in a very rural part of the Department / State of Sacatepéquez.

Cristina is requesting her 3rd Kiva loan to buy variety of thread and tools for her loom.

Cristina and the 8 other women speak Kaqchiquel and are part of the communal bank Friendship Bridge “Emanuel”. They run small textile shops, food businesses and tortilla businesses.

In addition to the loan, they benefit from receiving educational training, like the program "Microcrédito Plus" which covers loans, education and medical attention. The subject matter is relevant to their lives and are based in 3 areas: health, family, women and business. These women have been interested in learning about the importance of physical distancing, the use of masks, cleaning surfaces and caring for their health.

The Kiva lenders together with Friendship Bridge are of great help to these women! Thank you!
