From an early age, I was drawn to helping others. I attended Westminster College in PA studying Early Childhood Education and Special Education, where I earned my bachelor's degree, then worked in the psychiatric rehabilitation field until finding a position working with children with autism. As I began practicing Applied Behavior Analysis with this position, I learned of my love of the field, as it allowed me to advocate for autistic individuals, teach children, and support families. At this time, I enrolled in a graduate program at Cairn University studying Applied Behavior Analysis and began supervising clinical hours to qualify for board certification following my degree. I started Hummingbird ABA Therapy in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, shortly before learning of my own son's autism diagnosis. We are currently the only provider of Applied Behavior Analysis services in Centre County, PA. In the past year, I've grown my small start-up company from a solo provider to a small team of amazing behavior technicians and behavior analysts, and a large waitlist that keeps growing. Hummingbird ABA Therapy is a licensed Intensive Behavioral Health Service agency in PA, servicing Centre, and Mifflin counties. We provide Applied Behavior Analysis services with a focus on neurodiversity and self-advocacy to children ages 2-21 with autism or related disorders. Currently, we offer services in the clients' homes, schools, and community activities. While we started in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to provide services in the areas that reduced exposure as much as possible. Our wait list is growing every day, and as the primary provider of ABA services in Centre County, we have begun looking at buildings for a center. The plan for the center is to provide a location for our existing clients and waitlisted clients to receive their ABA services, then hire an in house speech therapist and occupational therapist so our clients can receive all their needed therapies within one location, reducing the stress on their families and allowing more progress and growth.
What is the purpose of this loan?
I am applying for this Kiva loan to cover the costs of 1 month of rent in our new building, furniture for the building, and any additional funds after furniture that could go towards client supplies. While we are hoping to secure our building by January 1, 2021, we also recognize that we have at least a month or two of time spent setting up the space, getting re-licensed by the state for use of that location as a behavioral health agency, and getting credentialed with insurance companies to cover services within our new space before clients are even able to begin receiving services there. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
