A loan helped a member to purchase organic fertilizer and insecticide.

Mujeres El Esfuerzo Group's story

Fifty year old Lucia is married to a farmer and the couple lives in an agricultural area in the department/state of Chimaltenango. They have 9 children, 7-32 years old, 7 of whom are married with children. The youngest two still live at home & attend the 5th and 9th grades.

Lucia and her husband have a greenhouse where they cultivate tomatoes, onions, and chiles that Lucia has been selling in the local community for 13 years. She is requesting a 3rd Kiva loan to buy organic fertilizer and insecticide for the cultivation of corn.

Lucia is the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Mujeres el Esfuerzo" that has 8 other Maya Kaqchikel speaking ladies who have businesses selling vegetables, especially tomatoes and onions. Each month, they meet with a Facilitator who engages them in educational sessions in 4 topic areas: business, family, women and healthcare as a part of the "Microcredit Plus" program. The Facilitator uses pictures, diagrams, games and role-playing to help the ladies learn good business management skills like budgeting, saving and investing. Bi-monthly, they receive basic healthcare services from a visiting nurse who provides exams, screenings and consults a part of the "Health for Life" program.

Thank you, Kiva investors around the world, for supporting the business growth and success of these ladies!
