A loan helped enable installation of over 50 clean water kiosks, serving 30,000 households with affordable water in Bangladesh.

Drinkwell's story

In Bangladesh, 20 million people are at risk of drinking water with arsenic, E. coli and other pathogens. This population relies on unsafe and unreliable sources, commonly sold at elevated prices. As a result, water must be boiled before consumed, a task disproportionately performed by women and girls.

Drinkwell is a technology-driven social enterprise that provides affordable and clean drinking water for underserved urban customers. The company designs, produces and installs water "ATMs" or "Kiosks" that filter water of contaminants using a proprietary filtration system at a lower operating cost and with higher efficiency than other technologies.

510,000 people have accessed safe water through Drinkwell, which empowers women by eliminating the need to spend 5 hours a day sourcing water and allowing girls to attend school and mothers to take part in income-generating activities. Each kiosk creates 1-3 jobs.

This loan of $300,000 will help Drinkwell install 50 kiosks. This is Drinkwell’s third loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program. View their previous loans here and here.

Kiva's board member, Maya Chorengel, is co-Managing Partner at TPG Rise Fund, an investor in Drinkwell. Maya was not involved with Kiva's decision to partner with Drinkwell, as she does not sit on Kiva's Investment Committee or make any decisions related to Drinkwell's funding on Kiva.
