The women who belong to the Laïdou group are all married, average 31 years of age with three children each and live in traditional extended families in the town of Fana (in the Fana coura district) in the prefecture of the same name, which lies in the region of Koulikoro (second administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They met through relatives and neighbors and are active in the sale of condiments, non-alcoholic drinks, cereals, fabrics and tubers.
The women in the Laïdou group are on their fifth group loan, having repaid the four previous loans in full.
Ada D., a member of the Laïdou group, is planning on using her loan to buy six 100kg sacks of cereals. She gets her supplies generally in the surrounding villages and at the market in Fana. She sells her goods locally and at the market at Fana to fairground people coming from Ségou, Sikasso and Bamako, for cash, wholesale and on credit, to a customer base made up of men and women.
She is expecting to make an average monthly profit of 75,000FCFA, which will be used for everyday family expenses; the balance will be reinvested in the business. .
