Angela is the coordinator of her group, Nuevo Renacer 1, 2, & 3 (Rebirth). She makes her home in a simple structure with her long-term partner and 2 children. She says that her most difficult challenge is owning a local salon; now she is hiring a place. In the meantime, she plans to continue enjoying to work in her beauty salon.
Angela is excited to be taking her 6th loan with Esperanza after having successfully repaid her previous loan and grown her business. She has had her business for 5 years. This beauty salon is her most recent business. She plans to use this loan to buy a hair dryer and a blower for her salon. She will use the profits to buy school supplies for her kids, and to save. She is always planning to improve her business.
This Esperanza associate began with us because she receives benefits by having a loan with Esperanza and with her group. Her story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican (many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti) clients generally. Her group is located in Samana, a lush rugged peninsula with a nascent tourism industry. This area, like nearly all impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic, suffers from unreliable running water (none of which is potable) and electricity.
