A loan helped to invest in raw materials to jump-start her hammock weaving business.

Chai's story

Chai is 58 years old and has no formal education. At an early age, Chai helped her parents farm the steep hillsides in the rural areas of Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. The labor of planting, cultivating, and harvesting was difficult, as well as dangerous. She explains it was a hard life and that her circumstances did not change when she married and moved to Phrae Province, Thailand.

Now that she is older, working in slash and burn agriculture is even more challenging. Agriculture also no longer provides enough income to cover the living expenses of her family.

Weaving presented a perfect opportunity for Chai to take control of her future and build the life she dreamed of. Now that she has trained as a weaver and found the work to her liking, she hopes to weave hammocks full-time. With this loan, Chai will be able to further secure her income and earning potential.

This loan is special because:

It creates employment opportunities for vulnerable populations living in remote rural areas.
