Emprendedoras De Tzunun Group's story

Olga, a 22-year-old married mother of two children aged 3 and 5, is proud to continue the tradition of embroidering colorful traditional textiles. She has three employees and delivers six traditional "huipil" blouses every twenty days to the local market. She shares, "I remember how, a few years ago, I was an employee and delivered these ‘huipiles’ for less pay. A year ago, I made the decision to start my own business, and I succeeded. My wish for the future is that my children understand the importance of continuing this tradition and have their own businesses."

She is applying for her first Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of high-quality thread in many colors.

Olga and six other Maya K'iche women are members of a Friendship Bridge communal bank called Emprendedoras de Tzunun, which is located in the department/state of Totonicapán.

Olga and the other women were only able to study a few grades of elementary school. They benefit greatly from the monthly trainings that are part of the Microcredit Plus program (small loans, training and health). Typically, the theme of a monthly educational session is based on one aspect of four topics: business, health, family and women. This month, the women are learning about the importance of getting the COVID-19 vaccine to take care of themselves and their families.
