In Guatemala the traditional clothing includes a customary "skirt" style (el corte), an article of clothing that is part of the traditions and customs of the ancestral Mayan culture. Dolores uses this type of traditional clothing and has managed her small business reselling traditional clothing for 10 years. She is K'iche' Maya, and she's 30 years old, single, and lives with her parents. Dolores was able to study for six years. She feels very proud to see her business growing, which is why she is seeking her fourth Kiva loan to buy new clothing designs. She is certain that with this investment she will have the inventory she needs to meet her clientele's high demand.
The eight women from the Communal Bank of the Bridge of Friendship "Javier" [Banco Comunal de Puente de Amistad “Javier”] are from the state of Quiché, and they speak the K’iche’ language. All of the women have businesses; some sell chickens, others weave traditional "cortes" and resell textiles. They expect to meet every month to participate in trainings related to business, health, family, and womanhood. These themes are part of the Bridge of Friendship's [Puente de Amistad] "Microcredit Plus" program (loans, training, health). These services are useful for the women who generally have little to no formal education. Every two months, a nurse offers blood pressure monitoring, pap smears, and family planning.
Thank you to the lenders from Kiva for financing these loans.
