Eight years ago, 45-year-old Emilia began her business of raising chickens and selling firewood. She is married with five grown children who are now over the age of 21. The oldest is married and Emilia has three grandchildren. She was able to support the primary and secondary education of her children with her income.
With her first Kiva loan, Emilia will buy more corn, feed and firewood.
Emilia has joined nine women, who live in the department/state of Suchitepéquez, to form the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Flores Margaritas”. The women raise chickens and pigs, and sell personal care products and firewood. They also are farmers growing corn. Emilia has been elected to be Secretary of the group.
At their monthly meetings, the women participate in interactive educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. Since they have little to no formal education (Emilia reached the 6th grade), a facilitator uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share relevant information drawn from four areas: health, family matters, women’s issues and business. Every other month, a field nurse offers each of them basic services, exams and consults. This part of the program is called “Health for Life”.
Emilia and her friends send their gratitude to Kiva lenders from all parts of the world for funding their much needed loans. Thank you!
