Seen first on the left, Marie is the featured borrower of Marie's Master Farmers. She and her group of farmers would like to sincerely thank all their Kiva lenders for their first loan. It enabled the group's members to break free from local lenders who were charging them nearly 100% interest on loans. Now all group members have fully recovered their businesses, have repaid their first loan and are successfully farming again.
The group is now seeking a second loan to pay for improved seeds, organic inputs and tractor rental fees. The global COVID-19 pandemic is causing food shortages in some areas of Sierra Leone as imported rice becomes scarcer. A second Kiva loan will not only further empower these women, it will enable them to take advantage of the current market for rice and enhance food access in Sierra Leone at a time when it is badly needed. The profits will be used to ensure all member's children go to school, and will also be used by the group to create a support fund for young female farmers.
