A loan helped to buy raw materials to ensure her hammock business continues smoothly despite global uncertainty.

Nu's story

Nu feels like she comes from "a very typical family here" in the village of Huay Hom. She and her husband have long been married and they have six children - two of our children have finished school, two of them are farmers and two are still in school. They have always been a farming family, working long hours in the rice and corn fields to raise food for subsistence and some to sell when prices are good.

Now, Nu has reached an age where she can't do as much work in the fields as younger people can. She ended up spending a lot of her time at home, with no way to help earn money to defray the cost of living for her family. That is why she was so glad to start making hammocks several years ago. She says "It didn't take me long to catch on and I enjoy watching the hammocks take shape." She has already been able to help her family buy transformative appliances like a rice cooker, a mobile phone, fans, and a refrigerator.

With help from a Kiva loan, Nu will invest in raw materials and yarn so she can have reliable income in the coming year. Weaving hammocks will allow her stay at home and look after the youngsters (while still earning an income). Nu says "I am very proud to be able to make my entire family's life better!"

Nu's loan will also ensure that her work isn't impacted by the global pandemic. Especially in this time of global uncertainty, Nu is grateful for your support to continue empowering her journey!

This loan is special because:
