The Upendo library was created in 2016. Inspired by my 3 black children. Reading together is one of our favorite pastimes. I soon realized black children were minimally represented in children's books I wanted to change that narrative. Year to date our library has self-published 4 children's books all of which are available through purchase through retailers such as Barnes & noble, target, Walmart, and in schools and libraries throughout Wisconsin.

The Upendo Library is an African American library. I publish books where children can see themselves represented. A portion of our proceeds goes back to the community and teaching author youth workshops where we teach them to create their own simple books. Year to date I have supplied over 2,000 children with free books. I am asking for this Kiva loan to help with my next project of producing 2 books one of which is geared towards children with absent parents or in foster care. I would like to supply these children's books free to charge to children taken out of the home & in transition.
What is the purpose of this loan?
Each of my book projects has cost roughly 4-6,000 because I am a self-published author. This Kiva loan will help me to produce the next 2 books which have a foreseeable future in big-box retailers as 100% of my other books have. I would also like to secure a storage facility or small space to store my publishing equipment and books as well as hire an assistant and a few teams leads to assist with my mission of connecting with local law enforcement's, group homes & CPS. I've had a very rough upbringing with absent parents I know how important books were for me growing up. I was able to escape through reading and learning things I was never taught. I would like to take my library to the next level and expand my reach.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
