A loan helped a family touched by cancer, homelessness, and gun violence rise from tragedy towards self reliance.

Terrell's story

As an Eagle Scout, I’ve always wanted to become a small business owner because they were the stronghold in my community growing up, which helped in my becoming a well-rounded young man. But in just 3 months I received 3 phone calls that changed my life forever. In the 1st month a call that my mother had been hospitalized with stage 4 cancer. In the second month a call that my fiancé was shot while at a convenience store. And in the 3rd month a call letting me know that my grandparents were in a severe head-on collision, neither making it out of the hospital alive. This changed my life in a way I could never imagine. Becoming the primary caretaker at this time, I lost my job, lost my car, lost my home, and nearly lost my life from stress, anxiety, and depression.

While caring for my mother, I started sewing again. A skill I learned from her at a young age. Concerned about generating an income for my family, and affording medical supplies and general needs, I thought that turning my hobby of making bow ties for myself into a business would be the perfect solution to reposition my family from homelessness while allowing me the time and ability to continue caring for my mother and fiancé through this trying period. As a result, a hobby that started in 2009 finally became a business in 2019.
