Business Description
RegCakes was originally started as a Cottage Food Operation in my home in 2015. I had a lot of experience baking and decorating cakes from previous years, but in 2015 I opened RegCakes as a 100% gluten-free operation, in response to my own allergies and the needs of gluten-free eaters in my community. The response has been tremendous! Through home sales, deliveries, and sales at booths and farmer's markets, our reputation has grown and our products' popularity has grown. RegCakes' production capacity was not nearly enough to keep up with increasing demand. In the spring of 2021, Regina shut down the Cottage Food Operation in order to re-form the business as a new, single-member LLC and enter the commercial retail world. Our aim at RegCakes LLC continues to be to produce fresh baked products in a 100% dedicated gluten free facility -- products which are difficult to find locally, and which taste absolutely as delicious as their gluten-containing counterparts. Cakes have been and will remain the RegCakes anchor product, but we also produce cinnamon rolls, Hawaiian rolls, naan, cookies, and other high-demand baked goods. The new RegCakes LLC will also, eventually, provide an expanded menu rounded out with hot and cold beverages. We operate (both baking and selling) in our new location in Lincoln Square Mall. We are leasing a portion of a very large suite, which will eventually be shared with a Kombucha brewing company and hopefully another compatible business or two, so that we can collectively boost one anothers' businesses.
What is the purpose of this loan?
Up to this point, I have used saved-up funds from my previous cottage food business to start up my commercial RegCakes LLC business without any debt. However, at this point, I see that taking on a small loan will help RegCakes grow more efficiently. This loan will be helpful in several ways: First, to pay staff: As we try to increase production, it is clear we need to increase the hours we pay our employees to produce more product. We also need a better retail display system. The location we moved into was not set up with a retail space, so we've been creating one from scratch, and we very much need a nice, large, refrigerated display case in order to increase sales. So, the funding will be used to pay employees for more hours of work (they are already willing!) until we can "get ahead" financially, and for a refrigerated display case. If I get enough funding, I could also really more equipment such as a flat-top griddle in order to produce one of our formerly most popular items: naan flatbreads, a cart for hauling our farmer's market equipment, and signage for better marketing.

Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
