A loan helped to expand her business by buying more bags of soya beans, tomato seeds, and other farm equipment.

Sylvia's story

Sylvia is a 34-year-old entrepreneur who lives with her husband and three children in the Chinsali district in Zambia. Sylvia is a farmer. She grows soya beans and tomatoes. She previously received a Kiva loan and successfully repaid it.

Now she is requesting another loan to expand her business. With her first Kiva loan, she expanded her inventory, which increased sales, and now her business is thriving. Sylvia is requesting a second loan to expand her business by buying more bags of soya beans, tomato seeds, and other farm equipment to meet her customers' needs.

She plans to use the profit she earns to support her family. Sylvia will repay the ‘social interest’ on her second loan by volunteering three hours per week as a CAMFED Learner Guide. In this role, she will facilitate classes for CAMFED’s ‘My Better World’ program with students at her local secondary school, which helps to build children’s self-esteem, and motivate them to remain in school.
