Juana is the coordinator of her group, Luz en desarrollo 2 (Developing light). She lives in a simple structure with her long-term partner and child. She says that her most difficult challenge is improving her business. In the meantime, she plans to continue enjoying to sew and to learn more about it.
Juana is excited to be taking her second loan with Esperanza after having successfully repaid her previous loan and grown her business. She has had her business for over two years. She started sewing small pieces at home and then a friend talked to her about Esperanza. She plans to use this loan to invest in her business. She makes and sells curtains, sheets, quilts and tablecloths. She will buy fabric, needles, thread and other materials. She will use the profits to invest in her business. She is planing to operate her own local business.
Juana's story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican (many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti) clients generally. Her group is located in Los Arcarizos, a dusty industrial area north of the capital where free trade zones are common. This area, like nearly all impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic, suffers from unreliable running water (none of which is potable) and electricity.
