Elvia is a 53-year-old married mother with a third-grade education. She lives in a coastal area in the department/state of Quetzaltenango. She had 11 pregnancies. Three of the children died shortly after birth because there was no way to access medical care. Another child died when he was older. The surviving children range in age from 14-35. The older ones have between six and nine years of formal education, and the younger ones are still in school.
For more than five years, Elvia has sold pork from her home two days each week. She also sells products by catalogue. She is requesting a Kiva loan to buy more pigs to fatten up and butcher.
Elvia, along with six other ladies, participates in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. The “plus” programs, including bi-monthly basic health care services and monthly educational training in health, women, family, and business, are essential to their success.
Had Elvia been able to access health care, her deceased children could still be alive. And, had she been able to empower herself with family planning information/methods, she might have been able to control her large number of pregnancies. Friendship Bridge understands these issues by providing interactive monthly educational trainings that are a critical component of the program.
