A loan helped to provide stipends to 515 Rwandan students impacted by COVID-19 and related restrictions on universities.

Kepler's story

Kepler is a non-profit higher education program that brings together innovations in learning and technology. Their curriculum blends online courses from international universities with in-person instruction and employment-focused learning through structured internships. All graduates receive a U.S. accredited degree. Since 2014, Kiva lenders have helped Kepler to provide over 700 students with more than $380,000 in loans to continue their education.

While historically a stable and sustainable organization, the global COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions have severely impacted Kepler. Universities in Rwanda were closed for in-person learning for most of 2020 and then restricted to 30% occupancy in 2021. In order to comply, the majority of students are studying from home and Kepler is providing stipends to cover their accommodation, food, and internet while off campus.

This Kiva loan will cover stipends for 515 students for nine months and help Kepler and their students to weather this ongoing crisis as cases are steadily rising and vaccine access is still low in Rwanda.
