Maria, a hardworking 44-year-old married mother of eight children (ages 5-25), lives in a temperate area in the department/state of Suchitepequez, located in the southwestern portion of Guatemala. Her husband is a farmer and is able to grow corn that Maria sells in the local market and other places. Maria also sells firewood as well for extra income. To guarantee a good harvest, she is requesting her second Kiva loan to buy fertilizer as well as buying firewood at the wholesale level.
Along with seven other ladies, Maria participates in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program (loans, educational training, healthcare services). They are members of the Trust Bank “Parcelamiento Candelaria.” The women understand the importance of solidarity and of supporting each other. They look forward to their monthly educational training sessions that empower them and encourage them to create a brighter future.
Effective business management tools are essential to their success in their businesses making prepared foods, convenience stores, and sales of firewood, basic grains, and tortillas. They also learn about nutrition, hygiene, health, and the use of medicinal plants. Understanding women’s rights helps them raise their self-esteem and value themselves! Every two months, the ladies have access to basic health care services.
Thank you, Kiva investors, for your kindness in funding these much appreciated loans!! You are very valued by Maria and her friends!
