The Cooperativa de Servicios Multiples Cedros Cafe is made up of 328 smallholder coffee producers in northern Peru that are growing organic coffee. They were founded in 2013, and are doing their best to improve their lives by trying to directly access international markets to earn more for their hard work by cutting out middlemen. Together with Kiva Field Partner Norandino and a Dutch foundation, Progreso, they are doing just that.
This unique partnership allows small-holder producer groups like Cooperativa Cedros Cafe direct access to international markets through a blockchain-based coffee trading platform developed by Progreso called Beyco. The benefits these groups and their farmers receive include better prices for their coffee, verified sales contracts, immediate payments to farmers, and financial and business training.
These benefits are extremely important for groups like Cooperativa Cedros Cafe. Especially important are the immediate payments farmers receive, which alleviates cash flow problems for them. Additionally, the financial and business training provided by Progreso helps the cooperative develop their business acumen and grow into a stronger, more stable cooperative.
This revolving loan of $100,000 will help Coopeartiva Cedros Cafe pre-finance the sale of multiple containers of their organic, fair trade coffee over the 6 month harvest season.
