A loan helped a Black-owned business purchase a new food trailer to expand into new territories.

Derek's story

When I was a child, my entire family would get together and eat barbecue. My aunt would bake cakes, pies, and other home-cooked foods and everyone from the neighborhood would come to share in what was on the menu. Food was a way for us to build relationships, fellowship, and share our culture with family and friends. I knew from an early age that I wanted the love for food to stay within my circle. Cooking is a family event and is the meeting place for families in my community. Now, my grandson follows me on the days when I cook on the pit and I would love for this business to grow enough to even provide for his family.

I work a full-time job during the week and then gain the energy to wake up on Saturday to feed a customer base that has committed themselves to my food because this is what I love. They anticipate the weekends and provide me with encouragement and motivation because they appreciate the quality of the food I have to offer. One customer described my barbecue as "the best in town" and it is an honor to be able to earn those comments!
