Both of my grandfathers were in the food industry, so I knew I would continue that tradition. I have compassion for this community and a sense of knowing people since I share experiences and values with them. I am passionate about equity, equality, and inclusion and it is especially important to address inequality within the West Oakland community because they typically have not had access to sustainable food, which Community Foods aims to provide.

Business Description
I run a full-service independent food market providing programs related to health, social, and general community engagement. I wanted to start this business starting in 2002, and the nonprofit's name was called People�s Grocery. I began working on it in 2013 full-time through a fellowship by the Kellogg�s foundation. The business has a physical brick and mortar location of 14000 square feet. In addition, we have a solid e-commerce presence for customers.
The biggest challenge that the business faces is marketing in order to get an adequate number of customers to have profitability. There are workforce challenges, as I aim to bring on younger employees especially from the local neighborhood. This workforce is not the most stable in terms of long-term employment. Achieving profitability means bringing on more customers, optimizing the supply chain, and expanding into the digital space. I intend on incubating more black food makers who are unable to sell independently, as well as incorporating a community-geared business model.
I am proud of the business for being able to operate in the area it does in West Oakland, where no one really has for almost 40 years. Furthermore, I have been able to garner a sizable amount of local community involvement and support. In fact, we have 700 public shareholders from the community who are invested in seeing this store grow. Currently, we have 27 employees, and will shortly grow to 30. Our business partners are community leaders. The most formal business partners we have is a San Pablo organization named SPARK, as well as membership in the Independent Grocers Alliance (IGA) The primary objective of the business is to increase access to fresh food in order to improve health outcomes for those suffering from chronic diseases due to malnourishment.

By employing local young people, getting 700 public shareholders from the community, and constantly engaging with the community to best serve their needs, Brahm defines success as uplifting the neighborhood, rather than raising his profit margin. Food has always held an important place in Brahm’s life, and a microloan will help him to continue using food to help others. There is a current lack of grocery stores and sources of sustainable food in the West Oakland community; prior to the establishment of Community Foods, the neighborhood was a food desert for 40 years.
