Melida is the coordinator of her group. La Buena Fe 1 & 2 (The Good faith). She makes her home here in a simple structure with her long term-partner and a child. Melida is excited to be taking her 4th loan with Esperanza after having successfully repaid her previous loan and grown her business. She plans to use this loan to invest in her business by buying chickens, vegetables, and fruit to sell in her little fruit and vegetables stand. She will use the profits to invest in her business and in the future she wants to build a house. In the meantime she plans to continue enjoying to be with her baby.
Melinda's story is representative of her group and of Esperanza's Haitian and Dominican clients generally (many of whom recently emigrated to the DR from Haiti). Her group is located in the rural area of El Seibo, an agricultural area. Like nearly all impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic, it suffers from unreliable running water (none of which is potable) and electricity .
