My name is Muhammad and I was born in Multan, Punjab, Pakistan. Growing up as a Muslim Pakistani-American in Maine, the least racially diverse state in the U.S., was a very unique experience. I moved to rural Maine from a city of 6 million people in Pakistan. The new place I came to call home couldn't be more different from the old; climate, people, culture, social interactions, and almost everything else about life was different between the two homes. Growing up and traveling between Pakistan and the U.S., learning the cultures and seeing them from two unique perspectives, helped me appreciate the two cultures and understand myself in different ways.
However, this was a precarious situation as well, because being between two different cultures also meant never being fully a part of something. It meant social alienation regardless of where I was. In Pakistan, I was an American and in America, I was a Pakistani. With the kindness of others and a charming smile, I�ve learned to be home in both environments.

Inclusion Maine�s mission is to create transformational change in our communities. Our aim is to help organizations become inclusive, attract diverse talent, and develop their talent to be most successful in the marketplace.
I founded Inclusion Maine because belonging is a human need and creating a sense of belonging helps people be the best of themselves if done so authentically. Feeling included and a part of something can have a transformational impact on people, their quality of life, their understanding of purpose, and their self-worth. In an age where we spend more time working than ever before, and where there is greater diversity than ever in the workplace, it is essential to teach human skills � to help people be the best of themselves and create environments that invite and welcome all.

What is the purpose of this loan?
My goal is to expand Inclusion Maine�s course offerings and work with local community partners, including other diversity & inclusion consultants and local immigration centers, to offer additional courses. Topics will include belonging, inclusion, cultural competence, bias, anti-racism, being an upstander, inclusion through online platforms, and a number of areas specific to our local community.
The course offerings will include free or reduced cost opportunities to learn directly from experts about how DE&I can help transform local communities from a grassroots perspective. We will invite community members, professionals, community leaders, and youth to these courses. Beyond the new course offerings, this funding will also allow me to improve our outreach, business development, and marketing, helping me share Inclusion Maine�s story with businesses across Maine. Working with professionals will allow us to tell our story in a more compelling way and reach a wider audience.
My hope is to hire a part-time employee to help expand into new markets and tap into communities I don�t have access to through outreach and business development efforts.

Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
