A loan helped a veteran-owned farm overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis.

Darrin's story

After serving 26 years in the US Army, during which there were multiple twelve-month-plus deployments to combat zones, I retired back to the United States to enjoy some peace. I quickly realized that this peace would not be found in an urban environment, but rather returning to my roots in the mountains of Eastern Tennessee. Coming from a family of sustainable farming and livestock producers, and having learned to enjoy the good, hard work of forest conservation, I established a farm in the Cherokee National Forest with my wife which took over three years to construct in efforts to be cost-efficient with a mind toward sustainability practices. My farm is a Greenbelt Property that is in active communication with the conservation entities for our district, working on the development of forestry and wildlife plans in addition to sustainable agriculture plans. Our personal efforts toward farming are also efforts toward conservation and landscape restoration.

Our farm utilizes forest farming practices to harvest trees as part of our business plan-- though we are listed as a tree farm, very little of our property actually requires that we settle the natural landscape to achieve this. We also have a young orchard of fruit trees, the cuttings of which we root to sell locally. Our current livestock consists of a small herd of angora goats, which help eradicate invasive plant species, cultivate natural compost, and produce usable fiber in bi-annual shearing. We also have a flock of ten hybrid chickens, the eggs of which benefit elderly neighbors alongside the fruit of seasonally rotated vegetable crops grown in raised beds, the pending installation of a greenhouse will more than triple this output) to prevent unnecessary commuting on mountain roads.

We are passionate about embodying the three pillars of sustainability-- people, planet, and profit.
