Our farm raises Icelandic sheep in the mountains of southwestern Montana. This amazing breed provides fiber, milk, and meat, while also providing a foundation for regenerative agricultural practices. We operate our fiber and milk product business through our Etsy store and we operate our meat business through our sister ranch, Little Creek Meat. We offer education, tours, and starter flocks to those interested in starting their own flock. We decided to start this farm to effectively utilize and manage the acreage on which we live. We managed this flock for another shepherd for a year before we moved the operation up to our place in 2016. We purchased the flock in 2017.
What is the purpose of this loan?
We will be using the loan proceeds to purchase hay for the winter season.
We usually purchase hay in fits and starts throughout the winter season. This investment will enable us to completely stock our hay yard in one go. It will be much more efficient, affordable, and less stressful. Our farm is located on an unmaintained Forest Service access road. This road is a two-track, rocky dirt road with a 12% grade. Hauling hay in the winter requires us to chain up the pickup and make many small trips. This increases the cost of feeding the sheep because of the wear-and-tear on the vehicle and trailer, the fuel to make the trips, the time to make the trips, and the dangerous hauling conditions. In addition, we pay premium hay prices when we purchase in the winter. Purchasing hay in bulk in the harvesting season will allow us to have the hay delivered on a semi and we will pay reasonable prices because the demand is lower during the summer. Finally, we will be able to focus our energies on other tasks on the farm instead of being consumed with hay delivery.
