Traditional and colorful fabrics like Mayan blouses called "cortes," or typical skirts, take time to weave and embroider. These beautiful garments are admired by travelers and collectors around the world. Catarina, a 34-year-old K'iche 'Mayan woman, has been making this product for 15 years on a wooden loom. As she is a married woman and mother of six children over the age of 8, this business allows her to divide her time into domestic and business responsibilities. Catarina was unable to attend school, but she joined forces with her husband to send her children to elementary school. As the product is sold outside of her community, Catarina employs seven workers and her daughter to work the eight looms. She, for her part, is dedicated to the arrangement of threads. Catarina requests the first loan from Kiva to buy a variety of yarn and two wooden looms to weave.
There are seven women of K'iche descent who are members of the Puente de Amistad Community Bank “Flores de Chajon.” They live in a rural area of the department / state of Quiché, an hour's walk from the nearest town. They are weavers of "cuts." At the monthly meetings, women appreciate receiving information on how to better run their businesses, care for their families, and empower themselves. Every two months, women have access to basic health services. “Microcredit Plus” is the name given to the combination of loans, education and health services. It works!!!
