A loan helped to buy fertilizers to improve a widowed mom's banana crop output and generate more income from her banana sales for her family.

Janet's story

Hello, lenders. Meet Janet, a widowed mom pictured in her banana farm. She is a farmer from the remote village of Nyamira, situated in the Nyanza province of Kenya. The living conditions in this area are tough because most houses have neither clean water nor an electrical connection. Janet's primary sources of income are dairy, vegetables, and bananas.

In the Nyamira area of Kenya, most people depend on agriculture to earn a living. Their biggest challenge is the huge deficit in access to agricultural inputs, meaning that farmers' yields and incomes are far below what they could be.

Juhudi Kilimo has partnered with Kiva to provide financial services to smallholders around Kenya. Through these financial services, farmers can now buy productive assets and important agricultural inputs for use on their farms.

Janet has requested a loan that she will use to buy farm inputs such as nutrient-rich fertilizer to improve her banana farm. This loan will enable her to improve her banana crop production through the use of quality farm inputs. This intervention will help her to fill the increasing demand for banana food in the market and, in the process, generate more income to repay the loan debt and elevate the quality of life of her family.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals, farm inputs and farming equipment.
