A loan helped a member to buy high-quality thread for her weaving business.

Mujeres De La Cienaga Group's story

Traditional wrap-around tube skirts called “cortes” are woven on floor looms and often have colorful intricate patterns and designs. Marcelina, a 22-year-old single woman, who lives with her parents, has a business designing and weaving “cortes.” She works with her father and another person. Marcelina sells her “cortes” on social media and at two nearby marketplaces. She lives in a rural area in the department/state of Quiche. Happily, more and more customers are coming to buy “cortes” from Marcelina, and so she is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of thread in various colors. The boy in the photo is the son of one of the clients.

Marcelina is the secretary of Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres de la Cienaga.” There are seven other ladies in the group, who have traditional textile businesses and raise poultry and pigs. Because they have little or no formal education, their monthly educational training sessions, a part of the Microcredit Plus program of loans, education, and health care, are tremendously useful. Topics range from healthy habits, nutrition, and hygiene to women’s rights/roles and self-esteem. They also gain effective business management tools, such as planning, investing, budgeting, and saving. Every two months, the women have access to basic health care services.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for learning about Marcelina and her friends and for funding their much-appreciated loans. The loans are opening doors into a brighter future because of your support!
