A loan helped a member to buy hybrid seeds and fertilizer to improve harvests of maize.

Mary's Group's story

Pictured above is Mary, who is often described as an extremely friendly person. She is 55 years old and the mother of six children. As a group leader, she represents seven farmers in Kakamega B (North) District, Kenya.

Mary is returning this season to work with the One Acre Fund because this means that she is able to earn enough to feed her family, which is why she decided to join in the first place. She says that she is happy to have made that decision because, since she first joined in 2015, she has been able to consistently feed her family, which has improved her day-to-day life significantly. Mary will use the profits she earns this season to send her children to school.

The group will use this loan to buy seeds and fertilizer to plant a total of 4.5 acres. Some members of the group will also be buying solar lights, so this loan will also fund the purchase of three of them.

In this group: Mary, Consolata, Christabel, Nelly, Mary, Rose, Violet

This loan is special because:

It supports smallholder farmers to purchase seeds and solar lanterns.
