A loan helped two manicurists of color grow the first black-owned nail supply and school combo.

Oleta Roy's story

I have been a licensed manicurist for over 30 years. I learned how to do nails in order to pay my way through college while studying to become and educator. I worked as a teacher for 20 years, but always did nails on the side. I love the creativity and the flexibility of being a manicurist, but I also have a serious passion for teaching.

I spent my first 5 years as a manicurist behind the table, but soon became an educator for major nail companies in the industry. I had always wanted to do nails full-time, but I didn’t know at the time how to mix education with nails.

I relocated to Texas about 7 years ago and if I weren’t a licensed manicurist I would not have been able to provide for my family. I had to get certified as a teacher in order to teach in Texas, therefore I did nails at an upscale salon in order to survive.

I worked in the salon and as a teacher for 3 years, then decided to go back to nail school and get my master educator license. Although it was not the most pleasant experience I learned was that students of nail technology still were not learning what they needed in order to be successful in the industry.

Being an educator at heart, I knew that opening a nail school partnered with a black-owned nail supply would be very impactful to the industry. I use my 30 years of experience to educate future manicurists as well as those that come into the store that maybe were not educated fully in the past.
