The Mateo Pumacahua Community Bank meets in the city of Chinchero in the department of Cusco. This city is most well-known for its Inca ruins, which tell the story of times past, when on what now the city streets, there was the house of the Inca “Túpac Inca Yupanqui.” This area is also interesting not only because of its ruins and temple, but also because of the local clothing and customs, and its colorful and well-attended Sunday market.
Upon visiting the Mateo Pumacahua Community Bank, we spoke with the bank member Julián. He is 38 years old and married with four children, and he lives in the city of Chinchero, in the department of Cusco. He works as a clerk at the Pisis gas station from 7am until 4pm.
Julián and his wife have a family business in textile production. He has already been working in the business for several years, and it is going very well thanks to the effort that he puts into his work. Being a member of the Fundación has helped him substantially to improve and make his business grow. With this new loan, he would like to buy alpaca wool and natural dyes - for example, cochinilla, a red plant-based dye - to make weavings. Julián’s wish is to be able to open an artisanal shop where he can sell his products.
